USER RESEARCH & DESIGN: YMCA

Our experience in reinventing the old, innovating the unknown and connecting insights to business needs and developing new products has helped leading companies transform their brands. The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  YMCA’s web presence is strong, multi-faceted and complex.

ATEA’s Sandhya S. Pillalamarri worked with Digital Bungalow and YMCA to examine and redesign the Y website’s terminology, navigation, content flow and general information architecture.  ATEA conducted a Heuristic Evaluation of YMCA of Greater Boston’s old website, conducted Card Sort studies, created a new Site Map and planned for, recruited, conducted and analyzed Usability Studies on the proposed redesign of the site (http://ymcaboston.org). The purpose of the card sort and usability tests was to discern the problems with the old and assess the usability of the new website’s information architecture, layout, look and feel, terminology and flow, and learn if prospective users can find the information they needed.  Sandhya presented to the executive leaders of Digital Bungalow and YMCA as each milestone was completed.

STRATEGIC USER RESEARCH: Pearson Education

ATEA’s Sandhya S. Pillalamarri was tasked with coming up with a way to help teams understand the needs of K-16 educators: what they care about and what they need from educational systems in order to become successful.  Our ethnographic approach utilized shadowing and interviewing techniques that allowed us to develop a deep understand of educator needs, emotions, expectations, attitudes and goals. We developed extensive personas for K-12 and Higher Education market segments.

Personas are detailed definitions of typical user types that represent the groupings of behaviors, skills, and goals observed and identified during user research. Personas form the backbone of our research. In developing personas, we have one goal: understand who your users are and what they need based on first-hand knowledge of those users

Many teams are forced to work from preconceived notions about who their users are—making assumptions about users based on their personal experience with various departments as well as anecdotal conversations with luminary customers and leadership. But relying on this sort of baseline information cannot match the value of direct user research.

Personas are representative users—character sketches that represent user segments.  They are fictional, but their goals, ambitions, motivations, behaviors, expectations, and experiences are very real. They are based on a rigorous research process that includes qualitative interviews and quantitative survey data.
